Build Inc., which will break ground Feb. 1 on 120 apartment units at 650 Indiana St., has paid $850,000 to build an arts plaza “to combine Burning Man’s artistic spirit with the Dogpatch’s industrial heritage.”
At least five large multifamily projects will break ground within the next 18 months in Dogpatch as developers and techies flock to the nine-square-block San Francisco neighborhood with working-class roots.
A changing neighborhood
The Huffington Post dubbed Dogpatch “San Francisco’s newest indie neighborhood” in 2013 even before any new multifamily construction got underway. The neighborhood’s mix of new and old creates that charm, as coffee shops spring up near San Francisco’s oldest school and a row of Victorian homes preserved in the neighborhood’s historic district.
Micro-manufacturing warehouses and breweries dot the area. The cocktail bar Third Rail has been heralded as one of the best new bars in the country. Dogpatch is also home to the 22nd Street Caltrain station, making the neighborhood a prime target for technology workers who live in Silicon Valley.
