Hayes Valley & Market Street, San Francisco
BUILD, the Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association (HVNA) and the JanSport backpack company held a party to unveil a new large-scale mural at 1540 Market St., otherwise known as All-Star Doughnuts.
HVNA’s Art, Culture and Entertainment (ACE) Committee has been eying this wall for a mural for years. With the recent purchase of the properties by Build for the One Oak tower, the mural is now a reality. ACE connected Build with Fifty24SF Gallery, who in turn brought in JanSport backpack company in to sponsor this epic mural. Enthusiastic with the idea, Build was happy to donate the wall and parking lot for the creation of the mural.
As part of their Live Outside series of street art murals, JanSport brought together three international female street artists to collaborate on this piece, which will be on display for a period of 18 months to two years. The artists are Caratoes, an illustrator and street artist based in Hong Kong; Lolo, Oakland’s Lauren Young Smith; and Tati, Miami-based artist Tatiana Suarez.
Painting on the mural began on May 3, 2015, and continued through May 9, when there was a party with DJs, a live band (local indie rockers Birdmonster) and free taco truck and free beer.
