BUILD enlists local artists and art organizations in unique partnerships to build community, activate space, and integrate beauty into daily living.

India Basin

The four-ton sculpture ‘RedFish,’ which was removed from Bayview Gateway Park in 2014 to make way for construction of the Blue Greenway Project, was returned to the shores of Bayview! A fantastic celebratory reception was held at Café Alma attended by William Wareham (RedFish’s creator), community members, representatives from the Port and Recreation and Parks Department, former Supervisor Malia Cohen, and Mayor London Breed.

650 Indiana

In 2014, Build engaged CMG Landscape Architecture and Place Lab to create and sustain great public space, to guide the creation and management of the Arts Plaza. Artist Victor Reyes painting this mural that encloses one side of the Dogpatch Arts Plaza, at the 650 Indiana project.

One Oak

BUILD is planning to install a series of large-scale exterior art canopies that will spark curiosity and joy to those passing by while providing wind protection for those who stay to enjoy a performance or a bite to eat. In addition, the canopies will provide power, lighting and shelter for public events and performances, and will substantially mitigate existing site impacts from wind and traffic noise.

1540 Market

While our One Oak project underwent the entitlement process, we welcomed artists, art studios, and other non-profit groups to occupy the building and provide a place for them to showcase their talents and beautify the neighborhood. This partnership with Artspan provided 22 artists from diverse backgrounds, working in a broad variety of media, with below-market-rate temporary studio workspace, along with programming and guidance intended to focus and nurture their artistic practices. Along with 30 ArtSpan artists, muralist Joshua Coffy painted the 6,000-square-foot “Bird Song” mural on the east-facing exterior wall of 1540 Market St.

315 Linden Ceramic Studio

315 Linden was acquired by Loring Sagan and designed specifically to accommodate designing and making of art, architecture, urban design, ceramics, and real estate development. All are intermingled in this interconnected hub of activity. As a potter and sculptor, the clay studio was designed from inception when the building was acquired. The studio is now producing functional stoneware for a variety of restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Fly Ranch

In 2009, the BUILD partners were introduced to Larry Harvey and his partners at the Burning Man Organization. Burning Man was in contract to acquire a 4,000-acre ranch in the Nevada desert on which they planned to move the annual Burning Man event as well as develop a desert art center. BUILD facilitated a transaction that allowed Burning Man to adjust its corporate structure, manage tax requirements, protect trademarks, establish a permanent office, and provide personal financial security for the six Burning Man partners. Real estate provided an elegant solution for these complex, multi-dimensional challenges, while preserving and honoring the basic precepts of Burning Man. We are proud of the part we played as advisors to Burning Man in establishing a clear path and solid foundation for everyone’s long-term benefit, including the event itself.
